Most exciting thing that happened was when people were coming to me and asking about my work and wanted to help

The most exciting thing for me was probably when a hip replacement that I had helped design and test was approved – which means it is now being put into people. It was amazing to think something I worked on was starting to improve people’s lives.
I also get excited when research I have worked on gets published so other people can find out about it and see if it helps their research.

The research I do is called ‘Tribology’ it looks at friction and wear of objects. One of the exciting things to happen was meeting the founder of Tribology, Prof Duncan Dowson. He named this research tribology and came up with the theories. It is basically like meeting a celebrity of engineering.
