The 3D printers I use are quite complicated and so I have been given training to learn how to use them, however there are still things that I am not sure how to do (but that is ok). There are simpler 3D printers available, but with anything new you have to go through a process to learn how to use them.

They can be a little confusing at first but we receive training on how to use them. Like most things you pick it up eventually.

I wouldn’t say that working with a 3D printer was confusing at first, more like frustrating and the frustration still remains even after years of experience. As a machine, 3D printer is quite simple: few motors that move the extruder and the platform as well as a motor that feeds the filament to the extruder. The most complicated part is to set the parameters of the slicer tool that generates the machine code for the printer. These can be tricky and can only be learned by experience. Don’t get me started on the shaking and heating effect on printing.. Overall, keep on trying until you get a perfect print and don’t get disappointed!

I’ve never worked with a 3D printer but my colleagues do and it is very cool! I would love to learn how to use it. I’m sure it’s a challenge but definitely worth it. I can see them being used more and more in the future for development of new medical devices.
